handbrake.jpgIf there is any media which is generally a pain to deal with, video has to be it. With formats and codecs too innumerable to count, obtaining video from sources and converting it for use with other software or devices is potentially one of the more frustrating tasks a user may experience. Let us introduce you to a program which can significantly reduce these frustrations, HandBrake.

HandBrake makes quick work of getting the video from a DVD to your computer with the option to save the video in MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM formats using Mpeg-4 or H.264 codecs. Once on your computer, video can be converted for online use such as YouTube or Revver, or for use on devices such as the iPod or iPhone.

HandBrake will accept DVD, DVD Images, and Video_TS folders as sources. It is truly a pleasure to work with and has saved us many hours of time and frustration when working with DVD video for clients. A quick rip with HandBrake and the video is in a usable format for import into FinalCut or DVD Studio Pro.

Other features include:
* Chapter selection
* Basic subtitle support (burned into the picture)
* Integrated bitrate calculator
* Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling
* Grayscale encoding

Be sure to give HandBrake a try.
